Welcome to Spiral House Park
For four decades, the late artist Tom Gottsleben and his wife, Patty Livingston, transformed the site of an abandoned bluestone quarry into a place of magical beauty — a varied landscape of gardens and fields filled with Gottsleben’s stone and crystal glass sculpture, the largest of which is a five-story spiral house. Woodland trails, bedrock geology, and a backdrop of stunning Catskill Mountain views add to the experience the property offers. In 2025, this 45-acre park opened for the public to enjoy.
The Spiral House
The centerpiece of the park is the five-story Spiral House, designed by artist Tom Gottsleben as the home he shared with his wife, Patty Livingston. The house literally grows out of the land. Sited on what was a chaotic heap of rubble from the abandoned bluestone quarry, the spiral walls gave the stone a new home with a deep connection to the surrounding landscape.
The curves of the house follow the golden proportions of the nautilus shell. Different from every perspective, the walls and roofline turn in a dynamic sweep around the central column. Wherever you stand, there is both movement and stillness.

Sculpture
More than 50 of Tom Gottsleben’s sculptures are sited throughout the property. Meticulously constructed from hand-cut bluestone, stainless steel, and crystal glass, many pieces explore geometric and organic forms inspired by the patterns found in nature and the principles of sacred geometry.
The largest piece in the collection is Rainbow Portal—a monumental circle of twelve 9.5-foot-tall arches surrounding a large central crystal. In sunlight, the sculpture comes alive, the crystal glass sparkling with colorful reflections and radiant projections.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the grounds and experience these works as they emerge from the landscape in surprising and inspiring ways.

Our gardens blend traditional ornamental plantings with thoughtfully selected native and regionally adapted species. It is a resilient mosaic that changes through the seasons, in ways that are beautiful and that also contribute to a diverse and healthy ecosystem.
Visitors are invited to experience the gardens at their own pace: wander along pathways that wind through sun and shade, pause by bluestone walls that frame intimate pockets of plant life, or discover quiet nooks designed for reflection and close observation. We also offer ecological gardening workshops throughout the season.

Woodland Trails
Our 1.7 miles of family-friendly trails are designed as interconnected loops, allowing visitors to create walks of varying length and difficulty. These paths lead through the former quarries where stone was gathered to build the sculptures and the Spiral House, past notable geological features, through varied forest habitats, and to scenic overlooks that invite you to pause and enjoy the beauty of the landscape.
For the 2026 season, the trails are open Saturdays and Sundays (hours vary by season, and are always noted on our home page). Entry is free to SHP members. Grounds passes are available at our welcome table as you enter the park.
